How to price a digital product in India

Most first time sellers in India price too low, then feel stuck answering questions for ₹49. This guide gives a simple way to pick a first price for a file or a course, and a plan for changing it later.

Start from what the buyer would do without it

A buyer compares your product with the other ways to solve the same problem, not with other PDFs. Write those down first.

ProductWhat the buyer would do instead
Goa in 4 days, PDFSpend an evening reading blogs and reels, and still miss things
7 day meal plan, PDFBook a consultation with a dietitian
Portfolio guide, PDFPay for a review call, or guess
Lightroom presetsLearn to edit each photo from scratch

If the other way costs ₹800 or a whole weekend, a price of ₹199 to ₹499 is easy to accept. If a free reel already answers the question, the file needs to give more than the reel did.

Use price bands, not exact maths

You do not need a formula. Most digital products from Indian creators fall into a few bands, and buyers recognise them.

BandWhat fitsExamples from our sample pages
₹99 to ₹299A short guide, a list, a single templateHostel and homestay list ₹99, Goa itinerary ₹199, Sourdough guide ₹299
₹299 to ₹999A detailed plan, a set of templates, a preset packLadakh road trip plan ₹299, Lightroom presets ₹499, Portfolio guide ₹899
₹999 and upA course with lessons, or a product with your time includedBake at home course ₹1,299, Figma basics course ₹1,499

Pick the band that matches how much work the buyer saves, then pick a round number inside it. ₹199, ₹299, ₹499 and ₹999 are easy to read on a phone and easy to type into a UPI app.

Launch price and raising it later

  • Start with a launch price for your first buyers and say when it ends, for example "₹199 until Sunday, then ₹299". Keep your word on the date.
  • Raise the price when you add something: more pages, a new section, a bonus template. People who bought earlier keep what they bought.
  • Change the price at most once a month. Frequent changes make buyers wait for the next drop.

When to give it away free

A free file works when the goal is to get a contact, not a sale. A free checklist in exchange for an email lets you tell people about the paid product later. How to build an email list from Instagram explains how.

What you keep from each sale

While buyers pay you directly by UPI, the full price reaches your account and Tapyoka takes nothing from it. Plan for the time you spend answering questions, which grows with the number of buyers.

Income from sales is taxable. Check with a CA about how to report it.
